This photo demonstrates the joint between two concrete panels above an opening. The construction joint must be maintained in order to prevent any leakage into the building. The joint is made up of a backing rod and then a mastic sealant applied over. This joint is applied to both sides of the panel (internal & external). The internal application is for fire resistance and the external is for weather sealing.
